Squashtober!

It’s squash season! I love the fall and I love this print! This unique project started a year ago with a plan that was both highly silly, and very seriously undertaken at the same time. The obvious title of this very serious scheme was Squashtober! First I worked out a color palette and researched squash of all kinds. Then I created a calendar of prompts: a different type of squash for every single day of the month.

I declared my plan and then I was really commited! Starting October 1st, 2023, for each and every day of the month, following my prompt list, and using watercolor, I painted a different kind of squash and then posted it on instagram and Facebook. As you would imagine, this involved a lot of challenges and a lot of opportunities to improve my art skills, and hopefully connect with other people out there in the world. My month of daily painting was so much fun, and so much work, and so totally worth it!

Then it was time to make a print! Using high resolution scans of the original watercolor paintings and Procreate (a digital art program), I composed a grid of 30 images from the project into a digital collage. This collage was then printed 11 by 14 inches, with archival pigment inks, on 100% cotton paper.

Now I have a beautiful physical reflection of all the creativity, hard work, and community fun that was Squashtober!

If you want one of these beauties I have them for sale in my Etsy store: Moon Cabbage Studios, which is easily accessible via the link in the header at the top of this page.
